Pergola Design Tips

A pergola is the simplest way to provide a more intimate space that offers a degree of privacy in a garden or backyard. Pergolas can work in any size of garden or space, from large country plots to smaller patio ideas. With many shapes, sizes, and styles a pergola can take, keep in mind its chosen purpose. This may be to lead you somewhere, form a focal point, or create a sense of division by adding a layer that isn’t a solid boundary. Read on to discover the essential tips for creating the perfect pergola for your space:

1. DESIGN A PERGOLA THAT IS THE RIGHT SIZE FOR YOUR SPACE

First step: Designing a patio layout should be determined by how you want to use it – and therefore the furniture it will house. So, if you plan to entertain regularly, you will want to consider what patio furniture you need – a dining set, a lounging set, or both – how big you need the furniture to be – in other words, how many people you might want to regularly host on it. The actual size determines your space and how focal you want the pergola to be. As a general rule, you should again plan a patio's size for how many people it might regularly host – and usually, that means around 25 sq ft of space per person. So, if you are a family of five, that's a 125 sq ft patio.

2. FIND THE RIGHT POSITION FOR YOUR PERGOLA

Pergola placement is key! The best place for a pergola will depend on the layout of your backyard and your reasons for including pergola ideas in your garden. Things to ask yourself: Do you want shade or sunshine? Going back to your intended purpose will help you determine the position. For example, if dining is your main intention, then you’ll want to a shady spot. Lastly, consider the point of view from inside the pergola as well as how the pergola looks from your backdoor.

3. CHOOSE MATERIALS THAT COMPLEMENT YOUR EXISTING STYLE

It's important that your design reflects the style of the interior of your home and the exterior materials it was built with. Timber is the most commonly used material for pergolas – western red cedar, iroko, and oak are all popular choices right now. Visit us at our showroom to see these materials for yourself! We are happy to guide you through the many choices.

4. ENSURE YOU AREN'T GOING AGAINST ANY PLANNING REGULATIONS

Speak with a professional! It’s highly recommended that you speak with someone who understands not only the building of a pergola but also understands the local rules and regulations for installing a structure. Structures often require city or town permits.

5. INCORPORATE PLANTING INTO PATIO DESIGN

With a good plan in place for your pergola build, it’s time to add plants! Working with a landscape company like JOSH, means you get the expertise of our entire team.
